What's your wallpaper on your phone and/or computer?

I’d never been in a drive-through car wash until recently (never had a car before), so I took a picture of the car wash from inside my car. It’s beautiful. Look.

When you walk into a bar, what do you typically order?

Probably nothing. Maybe one beer. I’m a lightweight. But I have some Blue Dream we can go smoke in the alley. Down?

What's the one word you are guilty of using too often?

"What?" — cause I can never hear people. And I get distracted easily.

What is the last thing you searched for on Google?

"Definition of malarkey." English is my second language. I look up word definitions often. :(

Who is the last person that called or texted you?

Landlord. Noise complaint.

What one thing drives you absolutely crazy?

People with no imagination. People who complain about noise.

What is one TV show you think everyone should be watching?

Les Revenants. It's a French show. Second season is almost out. So good. And Broad Comedy. Hilarious. Also Masters of Sex.

What is your favorite reality show guilty pleasure?

Ridiculousness on MTV and what’s the one where the chick eats her couch? My Strange Addiction. Both go great with Purple Haze.

What's the first CD you bought?

Puff Daddy and the Family, No Way Out, because of the song "I'll Be Missing You” —which I wanted to practice moves to for my seventh-grade dance.

Pick one: kittens or puppies?

IRL puppies, but on YouTube kittens. (Proof.)

New York or Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is the best city in the world. Had no idea until I moved here. East of Hollywood is where it's at.

Comedy or drama?

Horror.

Bacon or Nutella?

Nutella. I’m European, so Nutella is a big part of my identity/upbringing/ belief system.

And finally: Tell us a secret.

I lied about what my first CD was. Puff was second. First was actually this Canadian dance compilation because it had Corona's "Rhythm of the Night" on it. Good tune, man.

Catch Vanya on Scandal (Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC (and The Comeback (Sundays at 10pm on HBO).

Premiere: Nick Offerman's "Hanky Song"

Netflix

This Friday Netflix will offer to the world its newest special, Nick Offerman: American Ham. The full-length comedy show is described as "a master class in life, love, woodworking, meat eating and being a man," however for any fan of Offerman's it can be described in one word: hilarious. The show shares Nick's 10 tips for prosperity, the value of making things with one's hands, love advice, and stories from his marriage to Megan Mullally, who pops up throughout the performance as well. We got a chance to ask Nick about his inspiration for this show and, more importantly, how in the world he came to be motivated to write the "Hanky Song."

***

How did you find the process of selecting stories and jokes for the special?

Elucidating.

Netflix

Did anything end up on the proverbial cutting room floor?

Yes, plenty, as the show was deemed to contain too much "clean" language, and also some overly polite anecdotes that failed to mention either my balls or any bodily orifice whatsoever, so those items lacking such "quality" were left by the wayside.

At what age did you become fascinated with hankies?

I am not fascinated with handkerchiefs, but I am certainly a devout disciple of that most versatile of pocket accessories. As a young boy in rural Illinois, my Dad taught me to always carry a clean hanky every day, and my life has been all the richer for it. With a clean hanky and a multi-tool in your pockets, there's nothing you can't accomplish.

Would you say that you agree with the famous old adage, "The hanky makes the man"?

The handkerchief is not a gender-specific swatch. On the contrary, men and ladies alike can improve their quality of life by readily reserving a handkerchief in a pocket, handbag, or clutch. Thus girded, a person bearing any assortment of genitalia whatsoever will be safeguarded against misplaced mucus or other unfortunate ejaculations.

Do you happen to have a go-to hanky store?

Netflix

I do not. Such a store would strike me as superfluous, as really any small rag in the neighborhood of one square foot of surface area will suffice. If a staunch American can't procure or weave his/her own scrap of snot-cotton, what is this country coming to? What's next? Store-bought wooden furniture?!

Do you have any plans to write more songs in the future?

Describing my pieces as "songs" is extremely generous — for which I thank you sincerely. As such, I do intend to "compose" more "songs" for my continued efforts in engendering mirth amongst the American public. You can also expect to see from me further attempts to "play" my guitar.

***

And now without further ado, the premiere of the "Hanky Song":

Amy Poehler's Opinion On 26 Random Things

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

While on her whirlwind book tour for Yes Please the effortlessly funny Queen Poehler graced the BuzzFeed offices with not only her presence, but her thoughts and opinions on items of varying degree of seriousness. OK, so most of the following things are not at all serious, but her astute remarks about them are just as important.

1. Waffles

Yummy.

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

2. Green juice

Weird.

3. Electronic Dance Music

Ecstasy deaths.

4. Emoji

A steaming pile of poop.

5. The Real Housewives

Jail.

6. Taylor Swift's new album

1989 — year I graduated. So I was like, Wow, I feel really old.

7. Halloween

For children only. Not a fan of Halloween. Fuck, man. I can't stand Halloween. If I was dating a guy that was into Halloween I'd be like, Keep walking.

8. Boston accents

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

Pass. Just disgusting.

9. Pumpkin Spice Lattes

Too much sugar and flavor. Way too much flavor.

10. The Oprah Winfrey Show

God, I miss it. I miss Oprah's show so much, man. I should have written about this in my book. You don't understand what it was like, Oprah was on every day. Every dayyyy. After school. Every day for an hour. So good. The network, I'm all for it, but I just really miss her show. So much. I should call her and tell her this.

11. Going to the gym

No thank you.

12. Scrunchies

Oh! Um, [they're] fine. Also, it's OK to be a little depressed. Everyone is, sometimes. It's OK.

13. Crimped hair

The first thing I thought of was "music video." I used to go real crimp. I also like that they added it as a category on So You Think You Can Dance. It started in Houston, I think.

14. Wearing sandals with socks

…It's OK to be a little depressed!

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

15. Wearing sunglasses at night

No doubt, that is cool. I think it's cool. I think sunglasses are really cool. Let me put it this way: If a guy likes Halloween it's a pass, but if a guy showed up at my apartment at night I would be like, What's your story?

16. Poufy bangs

It was a tough time.

17. Yoga

Sure. I mean, I'd like to do more. I think it's really great. I'm not very flexible but I know it's not about a competition and just stay-in-your-own-lane… you know, it's not about that.

18. Texting the word "K" and "K" only

OK. I try to do that and it always comes up "I"; it autocorrects me. Also I try to text "oy" a lot and it comes up "yo," which is not great when a friend texts and is like, "It's not good, my mom is still sick," and I write back, "Yo." And also, while I have you — I assume that BuzzFeed talks to Apple and you guys all know each other now — it's ALWAYS "fucking," iPhone. It's not "ducking," it's "fucking." Stop. Like, get it right and make it "fucking." It's crazy that I can't say "fucking" on my phone; it's bullshit. It's ducking bullshit.

19. One Direction

Not so familiar but I like all of their hair. But I don't know their music too well.

20. Potty training

Oh, yeah, just got out of that. For myself. My children have been out of diapers for years.

21. Showering every day

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

That's what I do, is that bad? I know that you're not supposed to wash your hair every day but I forget. I'll be like, Don't wash your hair, don't wash your hair, don't wash your hair, and then i just instinctually start washing it and be like, Oh, fuck I wasn't supposed to wash my hair. I love a shower. I love a shower and I'm not afraid to admit it.

22. The Boston Red Sox

Yes. Yay. Go, Red Sox. Go, yay. I mean, I haven't really been following them but they are my team. And when they won I was in New York City and that was super exciting to watch it with other super fans like Mike Schur, who created Parks and Rec, and Seth Meyers. We stormed the streets.

23. Tina Fey

Queen.

24. Lorne Michaels

King. (laughs)

25. Cats

No thanks. Sorry. I don't hate them, but, um, you know. I like a lot of people who like cats. I feel like I'm going hear from the cat lobby here — I don't like any animal that you can't find when you get home. I don't like that. I want to know where they are, always.

26. Dogs

I mean, OK. I like them both, I don't want anyone to hurt them. But now that I have two little kids in my house the thought of feeding another living thing is like, No fucking way.

Kim Kardashian Explains Why She Cropped North Out Of That Picture

Tell Us About Yourself(ie): Rob Kerkovich

CBS Photo Archive / Getty. Chris Ritter / BuzzFeed.

What's your wallpaper on your phone and/or computer?

The wallpaper on my phone is a photo of my infant son wearing a turtleneck. I'm trying to bring T-necks back into the fashion forefront, so I figured I'd get him started early. My laptop's wallpaper is an Atari 2600, which basically shaped the course of my life.

When you walk into a bar, what do you typically order?

First I pretend to understand the difference between whiskey and scotch, and then I order one of those.

What's the one word you are guilty of using too often?

"Like." Like if we were talking, I'd be like, Oh man, I say 'like' way too much. I even put it in text messages. It's awful.

What is the last thing you searched for on Google?

"Benthic worm." I had to reference it in an upcoming episode, and wanted to know exactly what I was talking about. I was hoping it was going to be something from Dune, but no such luck.

Who is the last person that called or texted you?

Seventeen different friends to discuss the new Star Wars teaser trailer.

What was the last awkward situation you were in and how did you handle it?

I was on set and totally called a crew member by the wrong name, which I only realized after the fact. So I made a point to track him down and apologize, but it turned out he hadn't even heard me when I said it, which then made it more awkward.

When is the last time you went to a theater?

Well, I TRIED to go to a theater a week ago to see a friend's one man show, but we were too late due to baby-related delays. One thing I'm learning as a new parent: Always depart five and a half hours earlier than you think you need to.

What TV show should everyone should be watching?

The Golden Girls. I'm 100% serious. If anyone wants a lesson in great characters, track down reruns on cable.

And what is your TV guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasures tend to be more movie-based. Basically any horror movie from the 1980s.

What's the first CD you bought?

I bought two CDs at the same time: C+C Music Factory and The Doors Greatest Hits. I was pretty awesome.

What is the one food you cannot resist?

Sandwiches. The food of the gods.

What music are you currently listening to?

The newest TV on the Radio album, Seeds.

What movie makes you laugh the most?

This is the hardest question to answer in the history of ever. I'll cheat and say it's a split between Ghostbusters and the first Naked Gun.

What drives you absolutely crazy?

The paper thin walls in my four-plex apartment building.

Pick one: Kittens or puppies?

Kittens, for their immediate housebroken-ness.

New York or Los Angeles?

L to the A.

Comedy or drama?

Comedy.

Bacon or Nutella?

I just ate a hamburger, so I'll go Nutella.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee!

'80s or '90s?

'80s, for its various sitcoms about robots and/or aliens.

NSYNC or BSB?

The Spice Girls.

Hannah Montana or Lizzie McGuire?

(Googles Lizzie McGuire...) Lizzie McGuire.

And finally: Tell us a secret.

I rock a mean falsetto.

NCIS: New Orleans airs Tuesdays at 8/9c on CBS.

What's your wallpaper on your phone and/or computer?

An action shot of my boyfriend, Ryan, picking me up and spinning me around after breaking our 6 months of long distance a little while back. Makes me smile every time I open my phone. :)

What's the one word you are guilty of using too often?

'Unabashed'. Or 'literally'. My writers on Liv And Maddie have started a running joke to try and sneak as many 'literally's into the script as they can to throw me. We're all a big, dysfunctional family over here on stage 10.What is the last thing you searched for on Google?

Who is the last person that called or texted you?

My boyfriend, to tell him that I made it to work safely. :) I just got my license and my first car, so he's a little protective!

When is the last time you went to a theater?

Movie theatre: 2 days ago to see Big Hero 6, which was so charming, and THEATRE, theatre: I saw Heathers the Musical in New York, and Once in London. Both blew my mind.

What TV show should everyone should be watching?

Pushing Daisies! It's off the air, but besides Dr. Who and American Horror Story, it's the best show ever written. It's like a Tim Burton, CSI, Dr. Seuss fantasy land! By far my dream project, if it were ever to be re-instated.

And what is your TV guilty pleasure?

I love Extreme Makeover Home Edition. It feeds my Fantasy Dream Home monster that lives inside of me. I'm never not planning for my future house. Most of the files on my laptop are devoted to different rooms in my dream house. I'm embarrassing. What's the first CD you bought?

What is the one food you cannot resist?

Mac n' Cheese! Or garlic bread. Or dough, of any kind. Basically anything carb-y. Basically food. I love food.

What's the first CD you ever bought?

The first CD I ever bought was Gwen Stafani's first solo album. She was the light of my life when I was 8.

What music are you currently listening to?

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down is kind of rocking my world right now.

What movie makes you laugh the most?

Cartoons. Like, really high quality kids movies. Wreck it Ralph, Megamind, The Incredibles...anything with bright colors and funny voices. I'm a child.

What drives you absolutely crazy?

People who insist on being negative, complain about their lives, but don't do anything about it and expect change. Laziness in my biggest pet-peeve of all time. Get up, make a plan, do the work and Love yourself, people! :)

Pick one: Kittens or puppies?

Kuppies? Pittens.

New York or Los Angeles?

Oof. I eventually want a place on both coasts, when I grow up. I love them both for such different reasons. I almost chose NY over LA to pursue broadway! Stage is still one of my greatest passion

Comedy or drama?

I actually moved to LA thinking that I was just a dramatic actress, and I wasn't funny and could never do comedy! Never once in my mind did I think I would end up playing not one, but two lead roles in a comedy series on a comedy network. I love both equally, now! And I love projects that can let me do both, like Descendants.

Bacon or Nutella?

Bacon dipped in Nutella.

Coffee or tea?

1 cup of coffee at 8:00, 1 cup of coffee at 2:00, 2 cups of peppermint tea before bed. :)

NSYNC or BSB?

Unpopular opinion: BSB! They were always a little edgier. Mah boys.

And finally: tell us a secret.

I haven't grown since I was 13, and every girl cast opposite me isn't allowed to wear heels on camera, for fear that I would look minuscule. In all of the casting calls for my best friends on EVERY project, it says in big, bold, red letters: PLEASE NO HIGH HEELS. It's a little embarrassing.

Catch Dove in Liv & Maddie, on the Disney Channel, and the upcoming Disney channel movie DESCENDANTS, coming soon!

The Shay Mitchell Guide To Killing It On Instagram

$
0
0

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

After this post about her fabulous Instagram account went viral, we decided it was only proper to officially name Shay Mitchell the Most Glamorous Woman On Instagram and give her a trophy. But no trophy should go without explanation, and as such, we grilled her on just how, exactly, her Instagram account is so, so fly.

What’s your go-to Instagram filter?

It's [the video filter] Dogpatch. I like the contrast. I like it vibrant more so than really muted. But I know people have themes... some people that I follow have all Vespa or all Valencia and I want to be all over the map. It depends on the mood, it depends on the picture!

Do you take photos first and import them later or take photos in the Instagram app?

Noooooo. I snap a bunch in a row because I'm a little bit weird when it comes to photos — like if it's not straight. And I can't do certain things all on Instagram so I will first take them — so that I know that I have the photo — and then I can work it out later.

Do you use any other apps?

I love Camera+. It just has that vibrancy.

How do you feel about hashtags on Instagram?

I'm pro, like, a normal amount of hashtags. I feel like no more than three — because then why not just put it into your comment underneath it? I like a couple of hashtags, especially when I'm looking for something. When it's helpful then I'm like OK, cool. You know? Or it has to be really funny. The Fat Jewish has a lot of really funny hashtags. If they make me laugh or if they're useful then I like them.

What are your most-used hashtags?

Outfit of the day. #OOTD. Outfit of the Shay.

What do you think about wedding hashtags?

I think those are cool. I do like wedding hashtags because I've had a couple friends who've been married and they actually had their own. So when you make a crazy hashtag you click it and see all the photos, so it makes it a lot easier to see everything. That is when hashtags are useful! Please use them.

Do you only you look at your friends' wedding hashtags or do you look at other wedding hashtags as well?

Oh no, I look at a lot of other people's weddings! I randomly find them and then am like, "Oh my god, look at her dress!" I feel like I was there, you know? We all do that, c'mon.

How do you feel about tagging?

Oh, I love tagging. I just did that for my first time the other day!

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

What makes you say, “I need to take a picture of this”?

Everything. No, no, honestly when I'm walking and I see something I'll say, "Oh, that's a cool photo." Or I'm at a shoot and the stylist has really good clothes, I'll wanna snap a photo of it. If it's something that's visually appealing to myself, hopefully there's one other person out there in the world that will find it visually appealing too.

What’s your rule on number of pics per day, and how many is too many?

Well I kind of try to stay in the three zone. So I can do one whole top layer [of photos] and call it a day. Especially if it's all the same genre. But I have been known to do six to nine in one day. There's no shame in anything!

What’s one thing that’s super annoying on Instagram?

Probably when people do those big squares. So you'll see cutout photos of nine [separate] Instagrams. I mean, I like the end product but I [don't like] scrolling through an arm, then an elbow... I just want to see the whole thing. So I guess it's mostly that.

How often do you read the comments on your photos?

I browse through them every once in a while.

Have you ever/do you ever respond to comments on photos?

Occasionally, yeah! I like to see the comments, I like to know where they're coming from. I think it's always so cool when I'm like, "Good night!" and someone says, "It's morning here in Australia!" I'm like, "Awesome!" I like knowing that I'm not the only person awake at 5 a.m. It's cool.

How many people is it acceptable to follow on Instagram?

OK so right now I have this thing where I don't wanna go over 800 because, this is my problem — and I'm really being honest with you guys — sometimes when I'm scrolling I have to go to the same point where I last finished. I can't talk to you [until then] so when someone's calling me or texting me about something important, I'm like, "One second... one second... one second... I'm almost done!" And because I follow a lot of people I feel like that extends the process. And I'm not going to allow myself to go over 800.

What if you see someone that's great who you want to follow?

I have to unfollow somebody. Sorry, not sorry!

David J. Bertozzi / BuzzFeed

Are the rules different than Twitter?

Oh yeah. I think with Twitter it's totally fine. I love seeing all the news and stuff like that. With Twitter I don't know how many people I follow on that but I'm always open to following on Twitter.

Do you post it to your Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, etc. through the app?

I do. I sync it up to Twitter because sometimes I'm scrolling and I'm like, "Oh, what are they talking about?" and *boom* it shows me a photo. I don't do it on Facebook. It's mostly just Twitter and Instagram; they're best friends.

Do you geotag places?

Noooo. What if I'm at the gym but I'm not really at the gym? You know? I don't want people to know. It's for that reason.

Have you ever been in a situation where you said you were somewhere and then people showed up?

Yes. I did do that one time when I was just starting out with Instagram. I was like, "Awesome! I'm at the sushi place on 4th!" And then I walked outside and was like, "Hey!" But for restaurant people who take pictures of food, I wanna know what restaurant you're eating at so please geotag for me where you are so that I can go there.

Have you ever met someone IRL that you met on Instagram?

No, but I did drive by The Fat Jewish one time and I was like, "OH MY GOD! THAT'S CRAZY!" But that's about it.

Do you use the DM feature?

No — I don't know! Kinda? If I like, don't have your number I'll do that? I don't know. I don't tweet personal messages. I like a text, you know? A little bit more secure.

What are your feelings about selfies?

I hate them. (laughs) Look, I think it's cool. I think they're fine! If your whole feed is selfies then you gotta see a psychiatrist. But if they're spaced out a little bit... Or if you're a makeup artist and you're showing different makeup [looks] I always love those — and those are all selfies. But yeah, I think if as long as you're not in the same position doing the exact same thing it's different. You look different, you change... go for it!

How do *you* take the best selfie?

You always wanna look for your light source. I like a little tilt, as people have noticed. They're always like, "You make the same face!" and I'm like, "Thank you! Yup, I do. And what?" Higher up is better. This degree angle (see below). Something like that! Selfie lessons 101.

Selfie sticks: yay or nay?

OK, YES. And let me explain why. If I'm in my bedroom and I have a selfie stick then that's not the right time. But if you go to the Grand Canyon and no one else is around me how am I supposed to get the landscape behind me, proving to people I was there? Pull that thing out and you have the entire background right there! Make sure to drop your elbow down a little bit so no one knows it's a selfie stick.

Have you ever used one?

Yes.

What do you think about Beyoncé’s "7/11" video?

It's everything. Everything. OK, that video I watched a million times and it was so genius because she's taking everything we're already doing — we're all taking photos on our phone, we're all taking selfies — and she made her own video that was so with the times and edited it to perfection. I mean it was amazing.

Instagram videos: yay or nay?

Yay! I do like Instagram videos because they're short and sweet, they don't go on forever, so you only have that certain amount of time and sometimes I wanna see more than just a photo.

How long will you wait for a video to load before scrolling on?

These are reeeeally good questions. It's getting reeeeal personal! OK, it depends. Sometimes if they take a long time I'll try and refresh it. And if it doesn't then I scroll on by. I'll try to remember and think, Oh I'll go back and look at that. Suuuure you will.

Do you ever look at the explore page?

Yes, I do! And I always find it really interesting. Sometimes I'll see really cool people from Japan that I never would have heard of. A lot of times it's random — but I'll see a lot of cast photos and that's interesting. Or I'll see interesting photos of myself on there and say, "Whoa." But yeah, I think the explore page is cool.

Have you ever accidentally liked someone’s photo?

No. Yes.

If yes, what do you do: unlike or keep?

Oh, F that, I'm like *boop* [unlike]! It never happened!!! Never happened. Then I like 500 other people's so that hopefully you can't see that I unliked it, like maybe there's a limited time where you can see that you liked something.

What about if it’s from years ago?

Yup. Because I get tired by the end and my finger gets heavy. That is like, really creepy, you know? Who doesn't do that though? If I meet you I'm gonna see the first photo you ever posted.

Do you ever stalk other people’s profiles?

Yeah. There's this woman, Mimi Thorisson, and she's a chef in Paris. She has the most beautiful photos and her life just looks so... just really beautiful photos to look at. I'm always like, "What is she doing [right now]?" She lives in Paris with three kids and a dog and everything seems like perfection. I love Humans Of New York — such a great Instagram feed. National Geographic too.

How do you feel about emojis in comments?

I love it. I love emojis. It's just a funny little add-on.

What’s your favorite emoji?
